Peter Woo Biography

Peter Woo Kwong-ching was born in Shanghai, but moved when he was 3 years old to Hong Kong. There he was educated at St Stephen's College, before going to the U.S. majoring in physics and mathematics at the University of Cincinnati. After graduating, Woo started work at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York in 1972, and it was there he met the woman he was to marry, Bessie Pao Pui-yung, the daughter of Y.K. Pao the shipping tycoon.

After moving back to Hong Kong to continue his role at Chase Manhattan, in 1975 he joined Bessie’s family business Wheelock and Company Ltd. and The Wharf Holdings Ltd. Peter Woo became chairman of both companies who’s main focus was on real estate and property, their major assets being Harbour City in Kowloon and Times Square in central Hong Kong. Away from real estate, the businesses also have interests in telecom, retail, ports and hotels.

Woo is the owner of LCJG, a high-end retail group that includes Joyce fashion house and Lane Crawford in its assets. He stepped down from his role as chairman at Wheelock and Wharf in 2015, but remains an advisor, a role he also has for numerous other Fortune 500 companies.
