Joseph Lau Biography
Joseph Lau was born in Hong Kong, the oldest of 4 children, a brother Thomas and two sisters. He went to University in Canada, at the University of Waterloo, Kitchener. He was chairman of Evergo China Holdings Limited, a position he held from 1994 to 1998 and Chairman of Kwong Sang Hong International Limited (1998 to 1999), but it was as Chairman and CEO of Chinese Estates Holdings (2006 to 2014) where he rose to prominence.
It was in 2006 when he first became a billionaire, and much of his wealth now comes from his real estate interests in prime locations in Hong Kong. In 2014, Joseph Lau was found guilty of bribery and money laundry in Macau and sentenced to prison. However, Macau and Hong Kong have no extradition treaty, so he remains a free man.
Lau is an avid art collector with several pieces by renowned artists worth more than $1 billion. In 2017, he became ill, and transferred much of his wealth to Chan Hoi-wan his second wife, and a son.
