Tung Chee Hwa Biography
Tung Chee Hwa was born in Shanghai in 1937, the eldest son of Tung Chao Yung the founder of Orient Overseas Container Line one of Hong Kong’s most successful and biggest shipping companies. Like his younger brother Chee Chen, he studied at Liverpool University. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering, he moved to San Francisco and worked for General Electric. In 1969 he returned to Hong Kong and got involved in his father’s firm. In 1982 his father died and Chee Hwa stepped up and headed up the business.
He ran the operation for 14 years, through some of its most troubled times, including the threat of bankruptcy. Then, when he left to start his career in politics and serve as Hong Kong’s first chief executive, it was his younger brother Chee Chen who took over.
Tung Chee Hwa and Chee Chen sold their 68.7% stake in their family firm to COSCO the Chinese shipping conglomerate, for a combined total of $4.34 billion.
