Born in Jakarta, Eddy went to Australia to complete his education, gaining a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering at the University of New South Wales, and A Master’s in Engineering Science.

On returning to Indonesia, he founded his first business PT Elang Mahkota Teknologi, Tbk, in 1983 a tech company that managed to win exclusive rights to distribute Compaq computers across the whole of Indonesia. PT Elang Mahkota Teknologi, Tbk became Emtek and over the subsequent years via expansion and acquisitions, grew into the huge enterprise it is today, controlling three TV channels (SCTV, Indosiar and O Channel).

Emtek is also working with Alibaba, with regards to a digital payment system and operates two hospitals, namely EMC Tangerang Hospital and EMC Sentul City Hospital.
