Born in Yogyakarta, Irwan Hidayat (Liem Bien Tiong) is the grandson of Rahkmat Sulistio, the lady who founded Sido Muncul in 1940. In 1972, the company was passed on to Irwan and his four brothers and between them they have run it ever since, and own a majority stake, in what has become Indonesia’s largest herbal medicine company with an almost two thirds share of the market. One of its biggest brands is Tolak Angin.

Outside of medicine, the family have interests in the hospitality industry, with a portfolio that includes three exclusive hotels on Java. Hidayat owns a small zoo, a venture that was started when he was gifted a tiger.
