Susilo Wonowidjojo (born Cai Daoping) comes from a successful Chinese Indonesian family. The Wonowidjojo clan arrived from China in 1927 and set up home in Kediri, East Java, establishing a profitable kretek (clove cigarette) business Gudang Garam (translated as salt warehouse) in 1958.

Susilo was on the board since 1976 and became president of the company in 2009, taking over from his brother after he died. The business is Indonesia’s largest clove cigarette maker, producing 85 billion cigarettes a year.
