Kim Beom-su Biography
Kim Beom-su (also sometimes written as Kim Beom-soo, and known as Brian Kim) is the Korean billionaire behind Kakao, the nation’s most popular messaging app. Kim was born into a very poor family, and was forced to skip meals and work as a private tutor to pay his way through university. Despite this, he graduated with a BSc and MSc degrees in engineering from Seoul National University.
Kakao, used by 90% of smartphone users in Korea and also by tens of millions for shopping and gaming, was classified in 2014 by the South Koreran government as a “large company”. It was the first tech startup to achieve that distinction. The same year, it bought Daum, Korea’s number two search engine.
Away from Kakao, Kim Beom-su is the cofounder of NHN Entertainment and has invested in Upbit, the crypto currency exchange.
