Kim Sang-yeol Biography
Kim Sang-yeol was born in the southern Korean province of Jeolla to a poor farming family. Despite this he managed to attend Chosun University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts/Science. Then at just 28 years of age Kim founded Hoban Construction with a little over $95,000 capital and just five members of staff.
Since its creation, the company, with Kim Sang-yeol as chairman has grown into one of the nation’s largest construction firms. During the Asian Financial Crisis of the late 1990’s Kim took advantage of the low price of properties, expanding the company while many others were struggling and shrinking.
An internal merger in 2019 saw Hoban’s assets, and hence Kim’s shares more than double, giving him billionaire status. Kim Dae-heon, his eldest son is vice president with a 55% stake in the company.
