Tos Chirathivat Biography
The youngest of eight siblings, Tos was born into the prosperous Chirathivat clan in Bangkok. The family’s wealth came as a result of the Central Group which Tos’ grandfather founded in 1947. His father – Samrit Chrathivat, became chairman and served for 21 years, and it was under his leadership in 1957 that the group opened its first shopping mall in Thailand.
Tos studied at the Wesleyan University in Connecticut, graduating in 1985 with an economics degree, before moving to New York’s Columbia University where he gained his MBA. In 2002 he became CEO of Central Retailing, Central Group’s retail-development arm. He was behind the group’s international expansion, particularly into China and Europe.
In 2013 he was made CEO of the Central Group itself, a conglomerate that has more than 60 shopping malls and department stores, and over 5,000 restaurants and hotels. Recently, the group has invested in both the ride hailing firm Grab, and JD.com an e commerce project in China.
